Targets Beyond the Horizon

Improvements in 19th Century artillery technology slightly readjusted the balance between gun crews and target vessels. Longer ranges and heavier projectiles put target vessels at risk much further out to sea, theoretically over the horizon. However, guns still needed to be accurately aimed and so gun crews needed the support of artillery observers able to look further out to sea than was possible from the gun position on the ground or in a casemate. Coastal Delaware provides a good model for this situation. A Fort Miles gun crew, at battle stations with its gun on ground approximately twenty feet above sea level, sees the horizon only six miles out to sea, while the gun may have a firing range three-to-four times greater than that.
